Scotland’s premier racecourse is preparing for a period of expansion after securing a major new loan facility from Clydesdale Bank.

[Pictured: Mark Wilson, head of Clydesdale Bank’s Business & Private Banking Centre in Ayr; David Brown, managing director of Ayr Racecourse; and Stuart Rogerson, relationship manager at Clydesdale Bank.]

Established in 1824, The Western Meeting Club Group’s Ayr Racecourse hosts a number of high profile races each year including the Ayr Gold Cup and the Scottish Grand National Festivals attracting more than 40,000 visitors a year.

The rising profile of the sport and increased media sponsorship has led to a surge in popularity for racing across the UK. On top of its core offering the complex caters for large corporate and conference events, as well as weddings at the Western House Hotel and surrounding estate.

Ayr Racecourse, a new customer to Clydesdale Bank, has successfully secured £6.5m funding from the Bank. The loan has allowed the company to refinance its previous facilities for a five year period.

Ayr Racecourse managing director David Brown said: “There has been a huge surge in interest in racing in recent years which has been matched by large sponsorship and increased media exposure, particularly TV and online platforms.

“We have been pursuing an ambitious programme of development and refurbishment at Ayr which has allowed us to further enhance our existing services while also allowing us to adapt to the fast moving modern market.

“At Clydesdale Bank we have been dealing with people who understand our business and the sector we work in, which has been a key factor in our decision to switch our banking.”

More than £20m has been invested in the site since 2006 on priority areas including the Princess Royal Exhibition, Banqueting and Conference Centre. In the next five years The Western Meeting Club will be looking to increase visits to the Ayr Racecourse complex and maximise exposure to the sport.

Mark Wilson, head of Clydesdale Bank’s Business and Private Banking centre in Ayr said: “Ayr Racecourse has been part of the fabric of the local community for almost two centuries and continues to evolve and meet the needs of the current market.

“Clydesdale Bank is pleased to support the company and we are looking forward to continuing to develop our relationship in the coming years.”

The deal was instigated by Stewart Rogerson (Business Development Manager) from Clydesdale Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in Ayr with transactional support provided by Stuart McCallum who is a Business Development Director in the West of Scotland Region.  Operational banking will be provided from Ayr with the relationship managed from a West of Scotland Region perspective by Lorraine Delaney.

Clydesdale Bank is part of the National Australia Bank Group. Clydesdale Bank was established in 1838 in Glasgow and, as one of Scotland’s largest banks, has a proud history of innovation and support for industry and communities across the UK.

Ayr Racecourse is Scotland’s premier racecourse and also its the only Grade 1 track. The course has been on its current site since 1907 and is home to the Scottish Grand National and Ayr Gold Cup.

Leading Ayrshire businessman Alan McLeish has been named one of the UK’s top entrepreneurs in an evening of major success for Scottish businesses in London.

Mr McLeish, Managing Director of the QTS Group, was last night (Monday 7 October) named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the ‘Business and Consumer Services category of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards where four of the ten categories were claimed by businessmen operating north of the Border.

[Pictured: Alan McLeish (left) receives his award from Ian Dembinski representing award category sponsor Credit Suisse.]

Sponsored in the UK by Credit Suisse, Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year programme celebrates the achievements of those who build and lead successful, growing and dynamic businesses across the country. It is the world’s most prestigious business awards scheme for entrepreneurs, with programmes in 135 cities in 50 countries, and has been running in the UK for 15 years.

Mr McLeish’s award recognised the significant growth in QTS, as well as the company’s ambitious growth plans in Scotland, the rest of the UK and globally. Alan established his business in 1991 with a £300 loan, and QTS is likely to record turnover figures in excess of £70 million for the current financial year in the competitive rail and utilities sectors.

Award judges praised Mr McLeish’s “amazing personal business story”, and added that he had “pulled himself up by the boot straps” to build one of the UK’s leading specialist businesses.

Mr McLeish said he was absolutely thrilled to pick up the award. “The past few years have seen major progress and development for QTS across our business in the UK and worldwide and I am thrilled to see that recognised with such a prestigious award,” he added.

“To pick up this award in such prestigious company is the stuff of dreams and obviously a major personal highlight. Hopefully, it also in some way repays the faith my mother had in me when she loaned me that £300 to set the business just over 20 years ago.

“The whole QTS team put their heart and soul into the business and the huge investments in time, commitment and money we are making here in Scotland will help us grow right across the world.

“There are major opportunities at home and globally for our rail services business and we have set ourselves challenging goals for the next twelve months including doubling our turnover to £50 million.”

The QTS Group company, which employs 140 staff, is earning a reputation as one of the most dynamic and innovative companies in Scotland with a commitment to providing real opportunities for apprentices and other staff through industry-leading training.

The company is best known for the innovations that have made it a leading “one stop shop” service to the rail industry, with specialist road/rail machinery to meet all the challenges in the infrastructure, building stations, rail platforms and footbridges elements of the business.

Other Scots winners at the event hosted by the BBC’s Jeremy Vine, included Simon Howie, CEO of the Simon Howie Group, David Lamont, CEO of Aberdeen-based Proserv and Carl Hodson and Duncan Skinner of Glencraft. Their success marked Scotland’s most successful night at the awards ceremony.

James Lambert, chairman of R&R Ice Cream, whose brands include Fab, Skinny Cow and Kelly’s of Cornwall, was named the EY UK Entrepreneur of the Year at the gala event which was held at London’s Park Lane Hilton Hotel.

QTS is committed to supporting local organisations such as schools and charities, and are the major sponsors of Kilmarnock Football Club. QTS’s fleet of distinctive orange, white and black vehicles have become a well-known feature on UK roads as they work on some of the most complex railway infrastructure projects around Britain.

Scottish Ministers enter talks to safeguard Prestwick Airport

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon (pictured below) has announced that the Scottish Government is entering into talks to safeguard around 1,400 jobs by bringing Prestwick Airport into public ownership.

Prestwick Airport has been on the market since March 2012. The Scottish Government, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and South Ayrshire Council, has been working with current owners Infratil to help find a private buyer.

Despite those efforts and interest from potential investors, the process has now reached a point where it’s clear that no private buyer will be able to take the purchase forward in an acceptable timescale to the current owner.

Ms Sturgeon said: “Prestwick Airport’s importance to the local Ayrshire and wider Scottish economy cannot be overstated – and it is vital that all efforts are made to keep the airport open.

“Around 300 people depend directly on the airport for employment and, in total, there are around 1,400 people whose jobs depend on or are associated with the airport.  Unemployment in Ayrshire is already above the Scottish average and the loss of Prestwick Airport would exacerbate this situation.

“Taking account of the aerospace cluster at Prestwick, there are a total of 3,200 jobs directly or indirectly associated with the airport.  Whilst the aerospace jobs are not directly dependent on the airport, it acts as an anchor for these businesses. It is undoubtedly the case that this important part of the Ayrshire economy would be less secure in the future without the continued operation of Prestwick Airport.

“Prestwick also has important resilience capabilities that provide alternative options to Glasgow and Edinburgh in the event of severe weather conditions.

“Today, I am announcing that the Scottish Government has advised the current owners Infratil of our intention to commence a process towards acquisition of Prestwick Airport.

“Over the next few weeks we will focus on due diligence, legal and commercial issues around public ownership and the development of a business plan that will allow Prestwick to thrive once again.  I want to stress to staff and passengers booked to fly from Prestwick that in the meantime it is business as usual at the airport.  The airport is, and will continue to be, open for business.

“Once a transaction has been completed, I will make a further statement to Parliament.

“With perseverance, patience and innovative thinking Prestwick can have a positive future as part of the wider Scottish aviation industry.”

Ministers are entering into negotiations with Infratil over the potential acquisition of Prestwick Aviation Holdings Limited and its subsidiaries, subject to the completion of due diligence and the appropriate legal processes.

During that process, Infratil would continue to operate the airport as a going concern to maintain its assets and keep it open for business.

Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor Bill McIntosh (pictured above) said: “South Ayrshire Council warmly welcomes the Scottish Government's announcement today regarding Prestwick Airport.

“The Airport is critically important to the Ayrshire economy and to the Scottish economy. As well as passenger and freight flights, and pilot training, the airport also has fly-in, fly-out maintenance, repair and overhaul operations. The significance of the airport can be seen clearly by looking at its impact on jobs.

“There are around 1,400 jobs at the airport and dependent on it. The aerospace companies clustered around the airport have a total of around 3,200 jobs. These jobs are high value and are estimated to result in total employment impact at the Scottish level of between 5,000 and 6,000 jobs.

“The Council looks forward to working closely with Scottish Government on securing a bright and sustainable future for Prestwick Airport.”

Marko Bogoievski, Chief Executive Officer at Infratil said: “In March 2012 Infratil announced its intention to sell its two UK airports, Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Manston Kent Airport as part of a process to refocus its investment profile.

“Recognising the importance of the airports to their local communities, Infratil’s preference has been to secure a new owner with the capacity to support their future success.

“We believe that a Scottish Government acquisition of Glasgow Prestwick Airport achieves that objective and will work proactively with the Scottish Government over the next six weeks towards achieving completion of a transaction.”

Adrian Gillespie, managing director of operations at Scottish Enterprise said: “Prestwick Airport is a vital part of both the local economy in Ayrshire and the wider Scottish economy, supporting a high number of jobs and businesses.

“We are committed to working closely with our partners to achieve a sustainable future for both the airport and all it delivers for our economy and our communities.”

The beautiful function suite at Ayr Spice restaurant in Minishant is to become the venue for a wide variety of events in an exciting new programme including something for all tastes. There will be everything from an arts club to karaoke and indigenous, guest chefs from international cuisine cooking for the evening and then presenting demonstrations of their work, to psychic evenings – and much more. From November there will also be a monthly change of menu and a new healthy option on the daily bill of fare.

[Pictured: Ayr Spice Minishant Restaurant proprietor and head chef Mafiz Ali with Jack McChesney who is organising a season of Arts Club events at Ayr Spice.]

One of the most exciting innovations will be an international buffet for special occasions. In a cooperative venture with Dalduff Farm, there will be Scottish food and, in co-operation with other indigenous chefs, Japanese, Korean and Spanish items will take their place alongside the well-known Bangladeshi specialities from Mafiz’s kitchen. The first of these buffets will be presented at pre-Christmas parties and the restaurant will engage more live entertainment for its special nights. Both individual and corporate bookings will be welcome with special rates for larger groups – bookings for Christmas and the New Year period are now being accepted.

Concert pianist James McChesney, now retired from his post as conservatory teacher in Austria and settled in Ayr, is founding an arts club. It will cover music, art and a Burns Supper and the venue will be the Bangladeshi restaurant Ayr Spice’s lovely function suite in the old church at Minishant. The idea is not to compete with existing facilities but to specialize in helping young artists from Ayrshire at an early stage of their careers.

There will be two concert-performances among the six annual events and two groups of young people are being targeted. There will be those who are still at school and doing exceptionally well on their chosen instruments or of course, voice – all youngsters who may, or may not eventually study music, and the second target group will be a little further ahead and will consist of those trying to find their way into one of the most competitive sectors known to mankind - the performing sector. These may still be students or even have completed their courses and be trying to break into the profession.

Any young performers who would like to be considered for such a performance should contact Mr McChesney direct by e-mailing piano.vienna@btinternet.com with contact details and a possible 12 to 15-minute programme as well as quoting the instrument or voice category concerned. The respective tutors must be consulted before any approach is made and written permission will be required from the teachers concerned before any selection process or invitation to perform can be entertained.

Ayr Spice Minishant Restaurant

Ayr Spice Indian Cuisine can be found in the fine old red sandstone Memorial church at the entrance to the picturesque village of Minishant, 5 miles south of Ayr on the A77. The church was erected by the thread magnate Sir Peter Coats of nearby Auchendrane, in loving memory of his wife Glorianna, who died in 1877.

Indian food can be simple or elaborate, humble or opulent, within a culinary tradition that is centuries old. The unique gift of Indian cuisine is its inspired use of exotic spices and the finest fresh ingredients. Proprietor Mafiz Ali and his team at Ayr Spice are determined to bring you the best of that tradition, and look forward to welcoming you.

Ayr Spice Restaurant is open 7 days a week from 12 noon until 10pm including Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year. Takeaway and home delivery are also available.

South Ayrshire Council’s brand-new AMBITION enterprise and employment programme which offers new or start-up businesses fantastic modern office accommodation, hands-on business support and mentoring – and even grant funding – is expanding, with a new facility now open in Girvan.

[Pictured (left to right) Councillor Bill Grant, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Councillor Alec Clark, Ken Johnstone, Chair of Girvan and District Community Council, Councillor Bill McIntosh, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor John McDowall and Councillor Alec Oattes.]

The incubator unit provides the ideal location to develop and grow a new business, with The three permanent desks and one hot desk, which will accommodate up to five companies – three full-time and two part-time.

The library meeting room has been upgraded and the facility will be shared with the community.

Complementing the practical support the unit provides is a package of mentoring, access to expertise and advice and hands-on support to ensure businesses get the best possible start and really get the chance to grow.

The Girvan incubator has been opened less than a month after the first unit at Heathfield in Ayr opened its doors for business – and a third facility, planned for Maybole, will be opening soon.

The AMBITION programme will see the Council invest £1.5 million over three years to support job creation and economic growth in South Ayrshire through four key strands:

*         AMBITION for Start-Ups

*         AMBITION for Business Growth

*         AMBITION for Employment

*         AMBITION for Social Enterprise.

AMBITION aims are to help create jobs, keep jobs, help businesses start-up, help businesses grow, increase the number of social enterprises and, ultimately, help improve the local economy in South Ayrshire in a lasting and meaningful way.

South Ayrshire Council Leader, Councillor Bill McIntosh, explained: “AMBITION is all about taking a bold – but lasting and sustainable – approach to help achieve economic stability and security for our communities and I’m delighted we can now do this in Girvan.

“AMBITION is an integrated package of support that is designed to create jobs, keep jobs, help businesses start-up, help businesses grow, increase the number of social enterprises and ultimately help improve the local economy in a lasting and meaningful way.

“It’s about doing something different, through enterprise, to achieve the best possible outcomes for our communities, which can not only change lives – it can make lives.

“Starting a new business can be a daunting prospect, but that’s where we step in, offering the advice, guidance and support to help you succeed and I would urge anyone starting up – or interested in starting up – a business to get in touch with us to see if Girvan fits the bill.

“Our support will also help businesses increase the number of people they employ and – crucially – helping people gain the skills, knowledge and experience they require to take full advantage of these job opportunities.

“The incubators are a fantastic new way for the private and public sectors to work together, giving new businesses a dedicated business adviser, free business space, hot desk facilities, conference and meeting rooms, as well as access to finance and grant funding

“We have all that’s needed to support a business in getting started – all we ask in return is your AMBITION.”

For further information about the Girvan or the Heathfield incubator units or any other aspect of the AMBITION programme, call 01292 616265 or visit www.ambitionprogramme.co.uk

The key activities under the other three strands of the AMBITION programme are:

• AMBITION for Business Growth.

Offers access to a variety of financial grants – from £500 to £10,000 – for growing businesses as well as access to a number of loan funding streams.

• AMBITION for Employment

A wide range of programmes that offer both recruitment incentives and employment opportunities, with a particular focus on young people – including wage incentives where the Council contributions an element of wage costs; or the chance to gain some useful work experience, or the necessary skills and qualifications that will make residents more attractive to potential employers.

• AMBITION for Social Enterprise

Offers a package of training and support to develop entrepreneurship and leadership capabilities, provide start-up and governance advice, and provide a mentoring programme for social enterprises with potential for growth.

Demand in Scottish housing market remains firm

RICS September 2013 UK Residential Market Survey

In tandem with increasing demand from potential buyers, house prices continued to grow in Scotland with 32 percent more respondents reporting rises rather than falls, says the September 2013 RICS Residential Market Survey.

Prices have remained steady in Scotland since Easter and, significantly, this growth was seen right across the UK. Last month, every part of the country saw prices go up, with the exception of the North East of England where prices fell modestly for the second successive month.

With the Scottish Government’s recent launch of Help to Buy in Scotland, sales expectations look positive with a net balance of 56 percent more surveyors predicting a rise in sales in the coming three months. Additionally, buyers continue to access the market and demand increased during September with a net balance of 78 percent more surveyors reported rises in new buyer enquiries. Although a lack of homes coming onto the market resulted in the number of new instructions failing to keep pace with the burgeoning level of demand.

Sarah Speirs, Director RICS Scotland, said: “It’s encouraging that the market is starting to improve in all parts of the country with more buyers looking to make a move and more sales going through. Even so, it’s a big concern that the supply of property coming to the market is lagging so far behind demand, particularly with the recent launch of Help to Buy in Scotland. This imbalance is likely to result in further upward pressure in prices over the coming months, particularly in popular areas.”

Across the UK, each region saw supply increase as the recovery continues to spread from the South East of England to other areas. The South West and the North East, in particular, saw the number of new homes coming onto the market rise significantly.

Craig Henderson, Graham & Sibbald, Glasgow and West Scotland, commented: “The market has continued to perform well within the established good markets, with competitive interest and closing dates in the good market locations. Prices are showing some modest uplift as a result and are close to Home Report Values.”

RICS housing market survey is the longest running monthly survey of house prices in the UK, collecting data since January 1978.  The survey is cited by the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee at its monthly interest rate setting meetings.

RICS is the world’s leading qualification when it comes to professional standards in land, property and construction.

In a world where more and more people, governments, banks and commercial organisations demand greater certainty of professional standards and ethics, attaining RICS status is the recognised mark of property professionalism.

Over 100 000 property professionals working in the major established and emerging economies of the world have already recognised the importance of securing RICS status by becoming members.

RICS is an independent professional body originally established in the UK by Royal Charter. Since 1868, RICS has been committed to setting and upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity – providing impartial, authoritative advice on key issues affecting businesses and society. RICS is a regulator of both its individual members and firms enabling it to maintain the highest standards and providing the basis for unparalleled client confidence in the sector.

South Ayrshire Council apprentice plasterer Kristofor Breingan (21) was named UK Apprentice of the Year at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence Apprentice of the Year Award ceremony which took place in Hickley, Leicestershire.

[Pictured: Kristofor Breingan, UK Apprentice of the Year.]

Kristofor is a fourth year apprentice plaster, having won the Scottish finals earlier this year he was invited to attend the award ceremony.

Speaking about the experience Kristofor said: “I was really excited being invited to the APSE awards ceremony, it was a great experience meeting the other finalists.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be named UK Apprentice of the Year. I can honestly say that I was shocked when they read out my name. I remember sitting in my hotel room later that night thinking that things like this just don’t happen to a young man from Prestwick.

“I have received excellent training and guidance from everyone I have worked with at the Council. Very importantly my four year apprenticeship has flown by as I have had – while working very hard – lots of fun along with way.

“I would thoroughly recommend an apprenticeship with the Council to young men and women, you gain experience of work while learning within a large organisation.”

The judges were particularly impressed with Kris’s training log books, which show exactly how his training and learning has progressed. Another aspect of Kris’s work that interested them was his involvement in the Council’s voids team which helps bring empty properties back into rentable condition in the fastest time possibly.

Councillor Robin Reid, Resources and Performance Portfolio Holder for the Council (pictured above) said: “To be named as APSE UK Apprentice of the year is an outstanding achievement and I am very proud of Kristofor Breingan’s success.

“Kristofor has, like many of our other apprentices, worked very hard since he joined the Council and his dedication and determination to do well has paid off. I know that his colleagues in our property maintenance team are delighted with his success.

“I am sure that Kristofor’s success will inspire many young men and women to apply for an apprenticeship with us in the future.”

Bilateral trade agreements of over £8 million secured by Minister

Business, education, diplomatic and cultural connections between Scotland and India have been further strengthened through a visit over the past week by External Affairs Minister Humza Yousaf to Delhi and Mumbai.

[Pictured: External Affairs Minister Humza Yousaf at a VisitScotland event during his visit to Delhi and Mumbai.]

More than £8 million in bilateral trade agreements on clean water supply and healthcare were secured during his six-day programme, along with a further £6.5 million of investment in Scotland.

As well as accompanying the Queen’s Baton to New Delhi on the first leg of its international relay, ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Mr Yousaf met government representatives and existing and potential investors and hosted or attended events to promote and demonstrate the strength and breadth of relationships between Scotland and India.

[Pictured: The Queen’s Baton sets off from Glasgow to New Delhi on the first leg of its international relay, ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.]

Mr Yousaf said: “I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome I received in New Delhi and Mumbai, and by the enthusiasm for Scotland that I encountered at every turn.

“The Scottish Government is determined to capitalise on the economic opportunities of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to provide a lasting legacy for Scotland. And as one of the world’s fastest expanding economies, India is a top priority market for our companies.

“Bilateral trade of this kind clearly generates jobs in Scotland, and the business agreements signed during my visit have illustrated that Scotland is appreciated as a nation that embraces and promotes innovation. Our remarkable strengths in education, technological innovation and leading edge research and development also ensure that Scottish companies are ideally placed to take advantage of this market.

“And we in Scotland should be gratified by the real and lasting difference that’s being made by projects supported by our International Development Fund which are significantly improving the lives of some of India’s poorest and most vulnerable people.”

[Pictured: Humza Yousaf visited the Nizamuddin urban renewal initiative in New Delhi – a project to restore the Mughal Emperor Humayan’s 16th century tomb.]

* announcement of a distribution agreement between Perthshire-based company this-tel and Indian-based IT company Crane Global Solutions Ltd for its digital pen and associated e-health technology that will initially be sold into the Indian healthcare sector following a successful trial in a cancer hospital in Hyderabad and is expected to generate £4.6 million in exports.

* announcing the construction of a new £6.5 million whisky distillery in Glenrothes, creating 15 jobs and generating a predicted £3.6 million in new exports to India, Africa and the Far East, in a partnership between Indian beverages group Kyndal and John Fergus & Co Ltd

Provost Helen Moonie was recently welcomed to Torcy in France as part of a visit to celebrate 25 years of the town’s twinning with Girvan.

Provost Moonie was joined by Torcy mayor Guillaume Le Lay-Felzine, who hosted a special event to complete the silver anniversary celebrations, by signing the Torcy charter document – having already signed a similar charter in Girvan earlier this year.

[Pictured: Provost Moonie is welcomed to Torcy by Mayor Guillaume Le Lay-Felzine and members of the Torcy town twinning association.]

Provost Moonie said: “In May of this year, it was a pleasure to welcome members of the Torcy Town Twinning Association to Girvan, and I’m delighted to be in France for the second part of this important celebration, to recommit our two towns to the principles and benefits that come from town twinning.

“During the last twenty five years, many contacts have been established and lasting bonds of friendship have been built – and some of these now cross generations as the sons and daughters (and even the grandchildren) of the original town twinners develop friendships of their own.

“Even with all the technology and social media available to us today you still can’t beat getting together in person and we’ve seen regular exchanges visits between schools, family house swaps, cultural and sporting trips - and much more besides.”

Mayor Le Lay-Felzine and Provost Moonie then signed the new charter with Provost Moonie concluding: “Our signatures represent a re-dedication to working more closely together, deepening our mutual understanding of our wonderful communities and our countries.

“I hope, 25 years from now, the Torcy and Girvan town twinning associations will still be flourishing and celebrating 50 golden years of twinning and offer my warmest congratulations to each and every person for their invaluable contribution to this twinning success story.”

RAF says farewell to South Ayrshire

South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie led tributes to RAF Prestwick personnel as they bid a fond farewell to Prestwick and South Ayrshire before moving to southern England.

The RAF has had a proud association with Prestwick since 1936 and has been an integral part of the UK’s Military Air Traffic Control Services in that time, being awarded the Freedom of South Ayrshire in 2009.

They held a farewell parade through the streets of Ayr to thank people for their support over the years. There was an inspection of their ranks in Pavilion Road in Ayr, a flypast by an RAF Leuchars Typhoon Jet and then a procession through the town centre where they took a salute at the Wallace Tower.

Provost Moonie, who hosted a civic reception to mark this special occasion said: “I can say with certainty that those who serve at RAF Prestwick, and those who have served in the past, will be missed by the Prestwick community.

“The large numbers of people who gathered in Ayr to pay tribute to RAF Prestwick, and watch the service personnel parade as free men and women of South Ayrshire, sent out a loud clear message that their departure to Swanwick is a sad time for us.

“RAF Prestwick is an outstanding professional operation, which has made a vast contribution to the world of aviation and military history.

“Importantly the servicemen and women have blended seamlessly into our communities and made a great contribution to our local economy. The departure of RAF Prestwick will leave a big hole in the lives of Prestwick people.”

Mission will include high-level business discussions, speeches and government talks

First Minister Alex Salmond will arrive in Beijing today (Sunday) to convene a 30 company trade delegation focused on increasing trade in the oil and gas and construction sectors and deepening the friendship between Scotland and China.

[CLICK ON IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO.]

The First Minister will begin talks in the Chinese capital on Monday, meeting State Councillor Yang Jie Chi, the Chinese Government’s principal foreign minister, before undertaking a Scotland innovation showcase that will demonstrate Scotland’s expertise in a range of industry sectors.

On Tuesday, Mr Salmond will carry out education talks with Hanban, the body responsible for promotion of Chinese learning and language teaching across the globe, before undertaking a keynote economic speech at Tsinghua University. During the Beijing leg of the visit, the First Minister and trade delegation will also hold senior-level industry talks with Chinese companies.

The First Minister will then transfer to Hong Kong, undertaking a full day of business in the region on Wednesday that will include education research and development talks focused on life sciences and energy and meetings with energy industry representatives.

The visit will conclude on Thursday with a keynote speech to the Financial Times International Financial Centers Forum, focused on financial services and Scotland’s place in the global economy.

Speaking ahead of the visit, the First Minister said: “It is hugely important that, in an increasingly global economy, Scotland is able to engage with international economic giants such as China, identifying further opportunities for our innovative companies to export their expertise and high-quality products and drive sustainable economic growth at home.

“The trade mission I will convene in China this weekend will focus on two crucial industry sectors, with high-level government, education and trade talks examining opportunities for Scotland in the oil and gas and constructions sectors as well as wider opportunities around strengthening education links that are already bringing great benefits to both countries.

“During the visit I will also promote the excellent food and drink produce that China already adores, with notable successes for Scottish salmon and Scotch whisky contributing to a hugely encouraging rise in overall exports to China from £265m to £498m, between 2007 and 2012.

“And I will deliver two keynote economic speeches, examining Scotland’s place in the world and the challenges nations in the east and west face in building a sustainable and balanced economic recovery.”

As well as Scottish Development International, the trade mission participants are:

Oil and gas: Adrok Group, Addax Petroleum UK Ltd, Aggreko Group, AMEC, Energy Services International, LFH Engineering, Nautronix, The Oil & Gas Academy of Scotland (OGAS), Petrofac, Safehouse Habitats, Unmanned Production Buoy Ltd, Aberdeen University, Universities Scotland.

Construction: Construction Scotland, Anderson Strathern, Thomas & Adamson, Applegreen Homes, BRE Scotland, Holmes Miller, China Britain Business Council Scotland, Nestus, Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, Barr & Wray.

The visit helps meet the ambitions set out in the Scottish Government’s China Strategy to increase engagement with the world’s second largest economy and builds on recent successes that have seen exports from Scotland to China increase by 88 per cent, from £265m to £498m, between 2007 and 2012.

At the same time as the First Minister’s visit, six Scottish companies will also attend the China Fisheries & Seafood Expo 2013 in Dalian where they will promote their produce at a Scottish Kitchen sponsored by Seafood Scotland and Scottish Development International.

Far East markets accounted for around 2 per cent of fresh Scottish salmon exported in the years prior to 2011 when the Scottish Government secured a new import deal with the Chinese Government. This new deal followed on from the First Minister’s discussions with then Vice Premier Li KeQiang during his visit to Scotland in January 2011.

Since then, the proportion of global sales going to the Far East has risen steadily, reaching 19 per cent in the first half of 2013 with a value of £37 million – with China (£20 million) accounting for more than half of total sales to the region in the first two quarters of this year.

Planning for new Girvan leisure facility well and truly underway

The final proposed designs for the new leisure and community facility at Girvan Harbour are being unveiled today (Monday) by South Ayrshire Council and South Carrick Community Leisure as the planning process for the £8 million development gets officially underway.

The external designs – by architects Page\Park – propose creating an iconic landmark at the site of the former swimming pool, beach pavilion and existing parking area at Knockcushan Street in the South Ayrshire town.

The exciting designs give a flavour for what’s planned for the inside with proposals for the 3,425 square metre facility including:

• four-lane swimming pool and teaching pool, with associated viewing gallery
• children’s soft play area
• café
• community hall for theatre, cinema and other activities
• fitness suite
• rooftop viewing gallery with panoramic views towards Ailsa Craig and
• civic space, parking and landscaping.

The start of the planning process also marks the beginning of a 12-week consultation period, which will give local people and interested parties the chance to have their say on the planning aspects of the proposals.

This could include matters such as the impact of the new development on the immediate locality; the look and feel of the proposed development; the layout and design of the proposed development; and the various uses contained within the proposed development.

The consultation, which will run until late January, will include a public exhibition and drop-in sessions at Girvan Town House on 27 November as well as the opportunity to comment online, via a local newsletter and at community council meetings throughout South Carrick.

Councillor Bill McIntosh, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: “This really is a milestone for the people of Girvan and marks the start of the formal process to turn the vision of a new leisure and community facility into a reality. I’m sure the designs and the progress of the proposals will create a real buzz in the town and I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to get involved in the consultation.”

Andrew Sinclair, Chair of South Carrick Community Leisure, added: “We all know it’s been a long time coming but the important thing is for us to get the planning and design process right so that we can deliver a facility we can proud of – not just now – but for years to come. I’m really pleased with recent progress and delighted the planning process will give local people the chance to have their say on these final designs, which I have to say are truly impressive.

“The next task will be to focus on raising the £4 million investment required to match the Council funding so that we can get to work on the actual construction of the new facility as soon as possible.”

The public drop-in exhibition showing the plans, models and images of the proposed facility will be on display at the Town House, Knockcushan Street, Girvan between 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 27 November 2013 and everyone is invited to attend and give their comments.

First Minister Alex Salmond has taken Scotland to the heart of the Chinese Government in a high-level meeting with State Councillor Yang Jiechi during his trade mission to China.

During the meeting, which was held in the Chinese leadership headquarters in Beijing, the First Minister presented State Councillor Yang –who holds China’s most senior foreign affairs role - with a Mandarin version of the Scottish Government’s China Strategy, outlining the four guiding principles of Scotland’s engagement with the country.

The First Minister and State Councillor Yang also discussed how Scotland and China could forge a deeper friendship by building on recent successes such as increasing trade and investment and a memorandum of understanding that has extended the cultural partnership between the two nations.

The First Minister said: “My fourth visit to China in five years reflects the importance of the trade and investment relationship between Scotland and this country, as well as the enduring friendship between our cultures that has seen collaborations and exchanges in a range of fields over recent years.

“My meeting with State Councillor Yang was extremely beneficial, and I was taken with how well informed he was about Scotland and the business and cultural links that already exist between our two countries. He exuded friendship towards the Scottish people, having been a visitor to Scotland during his career as a young diplomat.

“Throughout the meeting, he talked of how Scotland was a fortunate country in terms of its innovation and natural resources and we were able to discuss how increasing partnerships in trade and investment as well as culture would continue to benefit both Scotland and China.

“I was delighted to be able to present State Councillor Yang with a Mandarin version of the Scottish Government’s Working with China strategy, as well as outlining how the trade delegation I am currently leading will be engaging with Chinese business over the coming days.

“I was also pleased to be able to invite State Councillor Yang to return to Scotland during our Year of Homecoming in 2014 in order that he can continue his appreciation of Scottish culture.”

The Ayrshire property market continues to show encouraging levels of activity according to new statistics released by leading Scottish property consultants, CKD Galbraith.

Following research conducted by the firm’s Ayr office, the quarter three period from July to September 2013 saw property sales up by 33% against the same period of 2012 whilst viewings and the number of buyers registered also grew significantly.

Bob Cherry (pictured above), partner in CKD Galbraith’s Ayr office, said: “Market confidence has been growing throughout the year and we have seen increasing willingness from buyers and sellers to make their next move. The statistics demonstrate an improving picture for the market and we forecast this is likely to continue into next year.”

CKD Galbraith Ayr statistics from quarter three show:-

Sales up by 33% against Q3 2012 (and up by 71% against Q2 2013)

Viewings up by 54% on Q3 2012 (and up by 72% against Q2 2013)

Buyers registered with the firm broadly static against Q3 2012 but up by 28% on Q3 2012

Number of properties listed for sale unchanged since the last quarter (and Q3 2012)

67% of buyers are locally based; 25% are national buyers; 8.3% are international buyers

CKD Galbraith’s sales teams operating across the whole of Scotland handled in excess of £400million worth of property (2012/13 financial year) ranging from cottages and conversions to country houses, farms and estates.

Bob continued: ““There are buyers out there willing to purchase and across the year so far, we’ve seen an increase in sales and viewings this year.  However, realistic pricing is still imperative in today’s market. Those properties with prudent guide prices are the ones witnessing more activity.

“In and around Ayrshire, we are seeing good levels of demand for attractive and well located smallholdings with land, normally up to around the £300,000 mark. We are encouraged by this activity, and on other property types as well, that demonstrates that the market is continuing to steadily improve.”

Athletics legend Steve Cram MBE visited Ayr last week, presenting Ayrshire Hospice with a donation of more than £11,500 from Clydesdale Bank and the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle.

The majority of the money, £9,558, was raised by the annual Clydesdale Bank /Elite Ayrshire Business Circle Charity Golf Day earlier this year. The event, held at Turnberry, attracts support from businesses across Ayrshire and in the last six years has raised more than £59,000 for Ayrshire Hospice.

A further £1,949 was raised by staff from the Bank’s branch in Ayr through a series of events including a sponsored trek round Cumbrae, a baking sale and a book club.

Steve Cram, in his role as ambassador for Clydesdale Bank, presented representatives from the Hospice with a cheque at the Bank’s Ayr branch. The Ayrshire Hospice provides palliative care services to patients and their families from across the region.

In acknowledging the donation, Anne Drennan, assistant fundraising manager at the Ayrshire Hospice, spoke of the importance of the business community to the hospice. Anne said: “We really value this support from Clydesdale Bank, the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle and business leaders in Ayrshire.

“Business events and partnerships like this play an important part in funding the highest level of care we can provide for patients across Ayrshire.”

Earlier in the day the former world champion, who won gold in the 800m and 1500m at the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, spoke to an audience of students at Ayrshire College.

Steve recounted experiences from his long career as an athlete and broadcaster, passing on tips on how to be successful in the sports industry and why planning and prioritising are essential for reaching your goals.

Heather Dunk, principal of Ayrshire College, said: “Our College is all about raising aspirations and inspiring achievement so who better than a top athlete to encourage and motivate our students to reach their goals.

“I am sure they will have picked up some great advice today. When they look back at their time at college this will be one of their most memorable experiences.”

Steve Cram MBE is regarded as one of the finest middle distance runners of all time, setting world records throughout the 1980s and winning silver over 1500m at the 1984 Olympics. His winning 800m time at the 1986 Commonwealth Games still stands as a Games record and cannot be beaten until they return to Scotland next year.

David Jellema, private banking manager at Clydesdale Bank’s Ayr Business and Private Banking Centre, said: “Welcoming a sporting legend like Steve Cram here has been a pleasure and a truly memorable occasion. We are particularly pleased that he was able to play a part in presenting the results of our fundraising efforts to Ayrshire Hospice, which provides a valuable service for the local community.

“We would like to thank everyone from the Ayrshire business community who supported our golf day and fundraising events for Ayrshire Hospice throughout the year.

“Steve has great experience over many years, first as a top athlete then commentator and businessman, and hopefully he has passed some of that on to the Ayrshire College students, inspiring them for the future.”

Clydesdale Bank is part of the National Australia Bank Group. Clydesdale Bank was established in 1838 in Glasgow and, as one of Scotland’s largest banks, has a proud history of innovation and support for industry and communities across the UK.
